Inflammation is used by the immune system to guard your body from the adverse effects of bacteria and viruses, the same method is used to attack food particles, with much the same effect except that the attack can be constant. Inflammation is a ‘double-edged sword’, although it protects your body from harm it can, itself, cause harm. With bacteria or viruses, the ‘risk-benefit ratio’ is stacked in your favour (most bacteria and viruses are deadly) but with food being constantly replenished, the ‘risk-benefit ratio’ can swing against you resulting in long-term damage including excess weight.
